Neck Pain
Apart from back pain, neck pain and shoulder complaints are the most common complaints we see in the clinic.
Many times patients enter the clinic complaining of neck pains as well as the shoulder. Often dysfunction and pain in one side of the neck can cause problems for the shoulder on the same side and vice versa. Below you will find some information on some common neck and shoulder problems that we can help with.
Whiplash
This is defined as a neck injury caused by a sudden acceleration then deceleration of the head on the neck in a forward, backwards or sideways direction. These are caused mainly by road traffic accidents and result in a traumatic injury to the ligaments and muscles in the neck. Symptoms include pain in the neck, painful and restricted neck movement and headaches. Physiotherapy treatments which include neck mobility and strengthening exercises, spinal mobilisations, soft tissue massage and heat therapy are shown to be extremely effective treatment. The earlier treatment is sought, the better the results.
Spondylosis
Spondylosis is a word used to describe the age related “wear and tear” changes that occur in the neck. About 90% of adults over the age of 60 will have some degree of spondylosis with the majority not noticing any symptoms at all. Again, neck pain, stiffness and headaches are the most common symptoms with some patients complaining of pins and needles in the hands. Although physiotherapy cannot cure spondylosis, interventions such as exercise, postural correction and release of soft tissues can relieve the symptoms.
