Clinical Physiotherapist-led Pilates & 1:1 Matwork Sessions
Pilates matwork is designed to improve physical strength, improve flexibility and posture and increase mental awareness. Pilates is a system of exercises first established by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s (Then named Contrology).
Here at Active Physiotherapy we offer 1:1 clinically based Pilates, where the original 34 Pilates mat based exercises are broken down into clearly defined levels to ensure gradual progression. The clinical Pilates matwork can suit a client who may be using clinical Pilates as a form of injury rehabilitation or pre-habilitation or is looking for a gentle form of progressive exercise.
Physio-Led Pilates is tailored to your personal needs, following a full initial assessment by an experienced Physiotherapist.
Pilates will be helpful for those with long term aches and pains, arthritis, niggling or recurrent injuries, osteoporosis, back pain or those who have not exercised for a long time and would like to begin in a safe and supportive environment.
Our 1:1 clinical Pilates sessions may be particularly appropriate for new and expectant mothers due to its positive effect on the pelvic floor. Visit our women’s health page for more information on how our specialist pre and post-natal physiotherapy service can help.
If you have any questions about our 1:1 clinical Pilates service please do not hesitate to contact us. Prior to accessing this service you will need to book a new patient initial assessment to assess you and determine if pilates could benefit your condition.
Pre and post-natal Physiotherapy
As every pregnancy is different, our experienced physiotherapist will design a specific program to suit your needs. Based on your assessment, your treatment may include strengthening of the pelvic floor and core muscles, joint mobilisations, massage, an exercise program to maintain flexibility and strength, education and advice.
Post natal exercises are exercises that are specially carried out following childbirth to help you to return to an active lifestyle. They are also an effective way of minimising any post labour complications such as back pain, pelvic pain and general weakness that can be a consequence of childbirth
Post pregnancy (vaginal or caesarean), there will be a degree of weakening of your pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles are vital for continence, pelvic stability and sexual function and they are adversely affected through pregnancy and delivery. To prevent long term problems, it is essential to start pelvic floor exercises as soon as possible. Our women’s health specialist physiotherapist Emily O’Grady can teach you how to strengthen your pelvic floor, guiding you through pregnancy and beyond.
